I ran a 03 most of last season with 8K hours on it and it didn't burn much at all....maybe 1 quart a week max. The 275's we had burnt a LOT more. That was the oldest one I've ever run and none of the newer ones have burnt oil either. It had most likely been rebuilt though...maybe it's time for rebuilds? How many hours on them and how much oil are they burning??

That's odd...they shouldn't be burning that much with 3500 hours on them....I've never had one get that bad. I don't think we put that much in our 350 last year in an entire week... and it started the season at about 8500 hours and ran 2x8 shifts a day. It was a Cummins though too....your's would be cat...but I've run a bunch of the cat powered units as well with no problems. I wonder if it's the new fuel?? What kind of fuel are you using? I heard recently that the new ultra low sufler diesel has no where near the lubrocity of old school diesel and that it's a good idea to throw a quart of low grade 10-30 into the fuel tank of a d-max or cummins pickup when you fill up to put some lube back into the fuel being burnt. Anyone else heard of this?? Given a quart in a 125 litre tank....one should be putting 3 quarts into a 350's 280 litre tank maybe?? I'd want to talk to a Prinoth tech before trying this....anybody want to weigh in?? I'll ask a buddy of mine who works for Cat in the meantime and see what he's heard about that.

Well...dyed diesel could be ANY kind of diesel....dyed diesel is not a type of diesel...the dye is a marker to keep diesel that tax has not been paid on out of road vehicles. The reason I brought up the ULSD is: it's being stated by some that because of the lack of lubricity in it....it's causing engines to wear faster, thus causing shorter rebuild times and oil burn. Although 3500 hours does not sound like a lot, it's the same as having almost 200,000 miles on a road tractor.... and there seem to be a lot of road tractors getting rebuilds in the 200K to 300K mile range all of a sudden.....

I have a buddy who works for Finning (cat) checking into what's up with those C9's. He asked what RPM's you run? I told him 1400-1800....but.. Do you guys have a set number you're directed to run them at?

Finning has not heard of dumping oil in with your fuel to replace lubrocity lost with ULSD...so I guess that's just a grass routes red neck idea at present and not recommended. I think it sounds kind of crazy myself...but it does make sense to me with diesel motor logevity seemingly dropping lately. The B50 on a C9 is 5000 hours (the point at which 50% of them need rebuilding) so the B10 might be as low as 3500???
