PB 200 - Fading Ram

Postby Canadianbombar on 03 Jan 2010, 16:12

On one of our PB 200's we have a problem with one of the main direction blade rams fading. It's weak to begin with....will only push maybe 1500 lbs at the start of the shift instead of 3000... and by the end of the shift it's useless....folds the blade back with a 20 lbs load. Gets extremely slow and noisy too. Same deal 3 days running now. Ideas??

Problem was coming and going last night making me decide it's likely a faulty directional valve...thoughs?

Generally, when rams go bad, their behavior is consistent. It's symptom shouldn't come and go throughout a shift. You can isolate the ram when it's acting up and see if you can "folds the blade back with a 20 lbs load". Then you'd know for sure. It sounds to me like you may have a cracked valve block. Temperature exacerbates the problem.

Would I not be loosing blood with a cracked valve block? I'm not loosing any at all?!? Tank has sat at the same level for weeks on end here.

It's possible to have an internal crack, -like from one passage w/in a valve block to another passage- and have leakage internally that can cause pressure/power loss, or "floating" of rams, like you're seeing. No fluid loss in a case like that.

Like I said; I would isolate the ram in question, when the symptom exists, so you can confirm or eliminate the ram from the equasion.

Got it...thanks! It's small on my computer and blurry when I magnify it...will print it up when I'm in the office and maybe it will print correctly. I think they already tried valve adjustments though :( On the bright side....our other refurbed 200 is supposed to arrive back Friday so we can maybe put this one down for a bit to get it figured out.

Mechanics had already tried Trout's troubleshoot checklist with no luck. Just got our rebuilt 200 delivered today and it's running sweet. The PB shop guys are staying at the resort tonight and going to work on figuring out this blade problem tommorow.
